Pavement macrotexture is a crucial element in assessing travel safety and comfort. This term refers to large-scale irregularities on the road surface, which play a significant role in water drainage and slip resistance. To accurately measure macrotexture, specialized tools such as Fiona I, Fiona V, and a Profiler are used.

Fiona I and Fiona V are advanced devices that utilize technologies such as laser scanning and high-resolution cameras to assess the texture and surface characteristics of the pavement. These tools collect detailed data crucial for determining the pavement's macrotexture. Additionally, the Profiler measures the road's elevation along its length, allowing a comprehensive evaluation of the large-scale features contributing to macrotexture.

The information obtained through macrotexture measurement with Fiona I, Fiona V, and the Profiler is essential for making informed decisions regarding road maintenance and rehabilitation, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for users.

This high-performance vehicle, certified as a laboratory vehicle, is equipped with various integrated systems that, when working together, are capable of conducting a comprehensive assessment of roads.

Vision System

The equipment features an artificial vision system that allows for the acquisition and management of images of the environment in which the vehicle is traveling. The system comprises two cameras: one facing forward in the direction of travel and another camera at the rear of the vehicle to capture signage against the direction of travel. Both cameras are necessary for the subsequent inventory of airport furniture.

Crack Detection System

The equipment includes a crack detection system that enables the acquisition and management of images of the pavement on which the vehicle is traveling. The crack detection system consists of a linear scanner camera and laser illumination, which together continuously collect data from the pavement, allowing the assessment of its degradation state.

The system can detect cracks of at least 1mm in length while traveling at a maximum speed of 80 km/h and capturing a pavement width of 3900 mm. This provides sufficient data for pavement analysis.

Georeferencing System

The vehicle is equipped with a georeferencing system primarily composed of a GPS, an antenna, and the necessary software management for accurate data collection of the system's positioning. Coordinates are acquired using GNSS technology, and WGS84 coordinates (World Geodetic System 84) are obtained.

Inertial System

For data collection related to the geometry of the road under study, the vehicle has an intelligent inertial measurement system for 12 axes with built-in GPS, based on inertial sensors and GPS technology.

The high-performance vehicle FIONA V, certified as a laboratory vehicle, is equipped with 7 integrated systems that, when working together, are capable of conducting a comprehensive assessment of roads.

Vision System

The vision system features a high-resolution spherical digital videocamera equipped with six 2 MP cameras, allowing the system to capture video from over 80% of the 360° sphere. This system utilizes LadyBugCapPro software, which enables the configuration of cameras for proper image acquisition.

Crack Detection or Multiparameter Detection System

The laser crack detection system (LCMS) is a high-speed, high-resolution system with transverse profiling capabilities that can acquire 3D profiles of the complete 4-meter width of a highway lane at normal traffic speed.

Both the resolutions and the acquisition rate of the LCMS are high enough to perform crack detection, macrotexture evaluation, wheel rut measurements, and much more.

Georeferencing System

The vehicle is equipped with a georeferencing system primarily composed of a GPS, an antenna, and the necessary software management for accurate data collection of the system's positioning.

Inertial System

For data collection related to the geometry of the road being studied, the LCMS equipment includes an inertial measurement unit (IMU) within its structure capable of generating all the related information for the study, including radii of curvature, gradients, and superelevations. This system consists of three sensors: accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer.

The Dynatest 5051 Mk III Laser RSP (Road Surface Profilometer) measures a series of indices and characteristics such as longitudinal profile, International Roughness Index (IRI), Ride Number (RN), and rut depth. The RSP features a unique "Stop & Go" function that allows the equipment to operate effectively in urban areas, at traffic lights, stop signs, intersections, and roundabouts, making it an ideal tool for data collection in urban and rural networks.

Measurement is performed through 9 lasers located on the beam installed at the front of the vehicle. An inertial system and 2 accelerometers are responsible for making corrections for vehicle movements and vibrations.

Once the measurement is complete, the stored information is analyzed, and a longitudinal profile is created for each laser unit. The Profiler RSP MKIII produces a longitudinal profile of the road every 0.25 meters of travel. This profile is used to obtain IRI and Profile Index values.
